Because a number by itself is perceived as a sign that has no obvious connection to the intended quantity. For example, we only associate the 7 with the quantity of seven points after we have arduously learned it.
Through the game’s symbols the quantity becomes visible. The 7 is shown here as a seven-star. Below it is 14, which, shown as two seven-stars, is not only tangible in quantity but also automatically associated with 7.
